The Body Writes in Machines is a kinetic sound-based installation by David B. Jang, developed in collaboration with Kai-Luen Liang, that translates bodily, DNA-related, and data-based logic into mechanical movement, light, shadow, vibration, and sound. The project begins from a question: what remains of the body when life is converted into data and performed by machines? In the work, a suspended mechanical structure of motors, cables, joints, and repeated gestures behaves like an unstable machine-body. It moves, trembles, repeats, fails, and responds through programmed rhythms and physical feedback. Rather than representing the body as an image, the installation treats the body as a system of signals, impulses, residue, memory, and vibration.
During the BROILER Residency, Jang and Liang will expand the work into a room-scale installation-performance environment. Jang’s kinetic structure will generate movement, projection, light, and shadow, while Liang’s sound system will translate DNA-derived information, motor rhythms, and vibration into acoustic and spatial events. Speakers, transducers, microphones, resonant objects, and feedback systems will make the machine’s behavior audible as well as visible.
The installation asks the audience to experience the machine not simply as an object, but as an environment. Viewers encounter a system in which bodily data becomes mechanical action, mechanical action becomes sound, and sound returns to the room as vibration, instability, and architectural disturbance. The work unfolds as a shifting organism: part sculpture, part instrument, part performance system.
The Body Writes in Machines reflects on the increasingly mediated condition of human life, where experience is continually translated into numbers, profiles, predictions, genetic data, biometric signals, and computational systems. Instead of treating technology as an escape from the human condition, the project suggests that machines inherit human fear, repetition, dependency, instability, and the desire for control. Through movement,sound, light, and failure, the work makes this condition physically and spatially present.
David B. Jang
David B. Jang is a Los Angeles-based multidisciplinary artist working across kinetic installation, machine drawing, projection, sound, biological/data systems, and computational media. His work translates human vulnerability, memory, and technological mediation into physical
systems that move, repeat, distort, and fail. Jang has exhibited at institutions including MOCA Los Angeles, Gwangju Design Biennale, Torrance Art Museum, and the California Institute of the Arts, where he teaches Integrated Media.
Kai-Luen Liang
Kai-Luen Liang is a musician and interdisciplinary artist based in Los Angeles. Working with code, generative sound, and digital media, his work explores themes of memory, erasure, migration, and machine perception. He creates hybrid instruments and glitch-based software systems that embrace failure and miscommunication as a mode of resistance and poetic possibility. He has exhibited internationally at ARS Electronica, SXSW, Boiler Room Beijing, Clockenflap and more, with music released on labels including SVBKVLT, Ran Music, and Robox Neotech. He is faculty at CalArts' Center for Integrated Media and a visiting artist at Occidental College, where he teaches courses on creative coding, AI, and sound installation.
