Four artists come together to present an evening of performances featuring just intonation and microtonality within a solo context. mattie barbier, Judith Berkson, Elif Dinçer and Jakob Heinemann each maintain an active solo project, traversing a unique and beautiful harmonic terrain of their own devising.
Jakob Heinemann will perform a set of solo pieces centering rational frequency relationships on the double bass.
Elif Dinçer presents material from her recent release, Blue House, where she improvised short songs in scales derived from just intonation using colors and poetic imagery as jumping off points to create melodies.
Mattie Barbier presents their work within experimental intonation, latent acoustic worlds, and the physical processes of low brass instruments.

Jakob Heinemann
Jakob Heinemann is a double bassist and composer based in Los Angeles. His practice draws on free improvisation, just intonation, and experimental sound, expressed through a broad array of mediums ranging from contemporary chamber ensembles to avant-jazz groups. Inspired by the possibility of creating complex soundscapes in collective frameworks, he’s interested in music as a communal experience, for both listeners and players. Deeply rooted in the creative music communities of Chicago, Wisconsin, and Los Angeles, his practice reflects a sustained engagement with place, listening, and timbre.
Judith Berkson
Judith Berkson is a composer, vocalist, and pianist. Her research centers around tuning and microtonality as they relate to memory and perception, exploring the small spaces between similarity and difference. She cites influences ranging from cantorial chant to jazz standards, and lieder from composers such as Schubert and Schumann. Her music offers a contemplative, spare space for the reworking of traditional structures within contemporary sonic modes and techniques. Collaborations have included work with Kronos Quartet, Laurie Anderson, JACK Quartet, Vijay Iyer, Alvin Lucier, Mivos Quartet, Wet Ink and Yarn/Wire. Recordings on ECM Records, Fresh Sound, Pi, and Notice Recordings. Film music presented at Venice Biennale, SXSW and Outfest LA. Festival appearances: Angel City Jazz Festival, Picasso Museum Malaga, National Sawdust, Women from Space Festival, and Bang on a Can.
mattie barbier
mattie barbier is a sonic researcher focused on experimental intonation, latent acoustic worlds, and the physical processes of instruments. they are a member of RAGE Thormbones, wildUp, echoi, Diapason, and are an active soloist on low brass instruments. they primarily work with trombone, as well as euphonium, bass trumpet, electronics, and bagpipes.
Elif Dinçer
Elif Dinçer is a harpist and composer who has spent her time developing a large instrumental vocabulary and researching alternate tuning systems. She is an active performer both solo and as a collaborator based in Los Angeles. Her practice focuses on communication through instrumental performance and exploring the harp to create phrases, layers, and sound objects in every way imagined. She released her debut solo album Blue House in March 2026 where she improvised short songs in scales derived from just intonation using colors and poetic imagery as jumping off points to create melodies.
