Cecyl Ruehlen dreams up instruments, situations and installations. Their work is shaped through devotional listening and guided by occult philosophical practices where the feral development of an idea or a tool is propelled by desires to uncover hidden matters, secret worlds. While located at the Broiler Residency, they will be completing the first realization of their latest chimeric instrument, the Cloud-Stone Piano. This "60-key" electro-mechanical drone object will be performed within a 12-channel system, in a spatial arrangement throughout Oracle Egg's gallery environment. Leading up to the final night performance event, Ruehlen will be working alone and with Oracle Egg's team to chart a unique acoustic layout that fractures the inner tonalities of the instrument into discrete, warbling voices that merge and bleed into each other. Through the spatial design process Ruehlen will create structured, yet improvised, compositional zones that accentuate a blossoming, arranged environment.
Cecyl Ruehlen
Cecyl Ruehlen is an intermedia artist. While they have led a nomadic life, the desert southwestern US has been their home base for nearly a decade. They morph actions, collaborative projects, and recording processes into topological contortions with an array of chimeric, hand-made instruments and mercurial sound forms. Ruehlen runs the experimental sound label, Harmonic Ooze Records, operates the non-commercial music and art venue, Wave Archive, in downtown Tucson Arizona, and teaches at the University Of Arizona. Beyond improvising and composing with many other artists, they are part of the duo Yellow Moon Temple, and the trio Bolt Of Void.
