We are too tired, like two sinking suns explores tiredness through two cellists, live electronics, moving images, and installation. The music is built around repetition, until familiar gestures begin to wear down and eventually fail. Gauze appears throughout the work as a way of holding broken things together, turning repair into both a physical action and an image of care. During the BROILER Residency, the work will expand beyond the performers and into the surrounding space, transforming the venue into a room of exhaustion and recovery. The environment is soft and fragile, but continually interrupted by the mechanical pressure of repetition and the sense that everything is being pushed a little too far.
Yifeng Yvonne Yuan
Yifeng Yvonne Yuan is a sound artist, performer, and creative technologist whose work moves across sound, text, and performance. Her practice explores fragility and pre-linguistic forms of expression, often translating fleeting moments and vulnerable states into sound and giving form to what might otherwise disappear. Her work is shaped by an interest in ritual, memory, and the body as a site of expression.
Katrina Agate
Katrina Agate is a cellist and engineer whose performance career spans classical, chamber, and popular music. She studied cello with Clive Greensmith, Jacob Braun, Jennifer Kloetzel, David Geber, and Alan Stepansky, and earned undergraduate degrees in Electrical Engineering and Music from the University of California, Santa Barbara. She later earned a master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from UC San Diego while continuing an active performing career. Her performances include appearances at Carnegie Hall, the KotorArts Music Festival in Montenegro, and performances and recordings with Coldplay.
Jocelyne Chen
Jocelyne Chen is a cellist and music educator with a background in both performance and academic study. She trained at the Xi’an Conservatory of Music before earning her Bachelor’s degree in Musicology from UCLA. As a performer, she has appeared with the UCLA Symphony Orchestra, the Northwest Symphony Orchestra, and various chamber ensembles.
Zhifan Guo
Zhifan Guo is a PhD student at UCSB whose work explores digital fabrication, embodied interaction, and material-driven design. Working at the intersection of design and artistic inquiry, her practice examines how computational tools, physical making, and craft-based processes can create new forms of tangible interaction and expression.
